Bolao Viewpoint and Mill

Description
The Bolao Viewpoint and Mill is a coastal scenic enclave located in the municipality of Comillas, in the Western Marina of Cantabria, on a coastal front of cliffs overlooking the Cantabrian Sea. The point functions as a natural viewpoint over the coastal relief and gathers an old mill next to the riverbed that descends towards the cliff, forming a very characteristic set of the western coast of Cantabria. The municipality of Comillas is located between Santillana del Mar and San Vicente de la Barquera, with an area of 18.61 km². The most unique feature of the place is the combination of seascape, coastal erosion and rural architecture in ruins. From the viewpoint you can contemplate the fall of the land towards the cliff and the mouth of the stream, with a small waterfall associated with the mill that reinforces the scenic attraction of the enclave. The panoramic view of the cliff and the coastline makes this point a very popular destination to observe the power of the coastal relief and the relationship between fresh water and the sea. Its interest is not only visual: the mill testifies to the historical use of water in a rural and coastal environment, while the cliff represents a fragile natural landscape exposed to erosion. The complex is mentioned in travel guides and local tourist directories as one of the most recognizable landscapes in the Comillas area, although some references place it administratively in the area of Cóbreces or Toñanes, so it is advisable to pay attention to the coordinates given in order to avoid confusion of homonyms.
How to get there
By car: from Comillas or Santillana del Mar take the CA-131 towards Cóbreces/Toñanes and follow the signs to El Bolao; the most common access is through Toñanes, before reaching the center of Cóbreces. Easy and short route, with little appreciable difference in altitude. Footwear: comfortable shoes with good soles, especially if it has rained. Best season: spring, autumn and summer evenings.
