The Fuente del Oso Lookout is a natural observation point located in the Fuente del Oso recreational area, within the Sierra de Cazorla, Segura, and Las Villas Natural Park, in the province of Jaén (Andalusia). Geographically, it is located near the A-319 highway, close to the Parador Nacional de El Adelantado and the forest settlement of Fuente del Oso, a short distance from the source of the Guadalquivir River. The site itself consists of an open area with picnic tables, natural shade, and a spring known as Manantial del Oso, where water flows from beneath a small green door at the top of the Forest House, which is covered in ivy. From this viewpoint, visitors can enjoy panoramic views of the mountains and the forested landscape of the Sierra de Cazorla, featuring riparian vegetation that includes poplars near the Puente de las Herrerías bridge, where the young Guadalquivir River can be seen. The site combines hydrological interest—as it is a historic spring that has been harnessed since ancient times via a channel built to capture its waters—with scenic value, offering an elevated view of the mountain range and the reservoirs. The site holds historical and cultural significance: a local legend recounts that Isabella the Catholic, during her conquest of Granada, spent the night in this area and, unable to wade across the swollen river, had her knights build the Puente de las Herrerías overnight and shoe their horses with the hooves facing backward to confuse the Moors. The area is protected as part of the Natural Park, a designation that ensures the conservation of its biodiversity and geology. The best time to visit is in spring or fall, when the weather is milder and the riverside vegetation is at its most vibrant; it’s also recommended to visit in the morning to avoid the intense summer heat and enjoy better lighting for the views.
