Las Cárcavas is a place of erosion very marked by gullies, furrows and small towers of reddish clay, modeled for centuries by rain and wind in a terrain easy to undo. The result is an abrupt and almost desert-like landscape, with strong contrasts of color and relief, reminiscent of an arid scenery with a very unique appearance. The point of visit allows to observe closely the capricious forms of the land, especially visible on slopes and slopes where the water has excavated channels and natural chimneys. From the route you can also see the surroundings of the Pontón de la Oliva, with the reservoir and the dry hills of the Sierra de Ayllón, which helps to understand the contrast between the human work of the dam and the natural modeling of the landscape. The area is regularly mentioned in Madrid excursion guides for its geomorphological interest and for the popular hiking route that starts at Pontón de la Oliva. Although there is no specific protection figure for the site, it is part of a very popular area for walkers and hikers, on the border between Madrid and Guadalajara. The best time is usually spring and autumn, when the heat is milder and the terrain is more comfortable. On dry days, the low light in the early or late afternoon brings out the ochre and reddish tones of the terrain.
