The Laguna de Zóñar is an endorheic lagoon of permanent and moderately saline waters, with a sheet of water of about 37 hectares and an outstanding depth for the south of Córdoba. It is part of the group of wetlands known as Lagunas del Sur de Córdoba, within the municipality of Aguilar de la Frontera, and is surrounded by a belt of perilagunar vegetation that softens the border between the water and the Mediterranean scrub. From the visit area you get a clear reading of the wetland: the large pool of water, the reeds and bulrushes of the border, and the fauna associated with a key enclave for waterfowl. It is a particularly interesting point for the observation of white-headed duck, as well as other species linked to inland lagoons such as grebes, coots, ducks and birds of prey associated with the environment. It has a remarkable natural value because it is protected as a Nature Reserve and also integrates the Natura 2000 Network and Ramsar designation. The lagoon itself is often cited as the deepest in Andalusia and as the only natural lake in Andalusia, which explains its presence in nature and ornithology guides. The visit is more grateful with good side light, early in the morning or at dusk, and in the months of greatest ornithological activity, especially in autumn and winter and in the breeding period of waterfowl.
