The Zafra Lagoon is a natural area classified as a seasonal lake, located in the Zafra-Río Bodión region, in the province of Badajoz, Extremadura. It is an endorheic depression approximately 200 to 300 meters in diameter, which accumulates water mainly during the fall and winter months, derived from surface runoff and groundwater recharge in a geological context of clay and limestone soils. In summer, the lagoon is usually partially or completely dry, revealing a compacted earthen bottom with remnants of hydrophilic vegetation adapted to arid conditions. From the observation point, one can see an open expanse that changes dramatically depending on the season: in winter, it reflects the sky and attracts waterfowl such as herons and ducks; in summer, it becomes a landscape of dry earth with low scrub. The area is of interest for its ecological value as a temporary refuge for local wildlife and for its integration into the region’s rural landscape; it has no specific official protection status, although it is located in an area of interest for nature observation. The lagoon appears in local guides to natural sites in Extremadura and is mentioned in recent Google Maps reviews as a peaceful place to visit, ideal for short walks. The best time to visit is between November and March, when the lagoon is full and the vegetation is more abundant, offering more evocative views and greater biological activity.
