The Medina Lagoon is a shallow water steppe lagoon, the largest in the province of Cadiz and one of the largest in Andalusia, with an average surface area of 120 hectares. It is located in the municipality of Jerez de la Frontera, in an agricultural depression modeled by gentle hills that channel rainwater and the contribution of the Fuente Bermeja stream. Its basin and its water level vary according to the rainfall, so its appearance changes from one year to another. From the observation points you get an open view of the sheet of water, the belt of perilagunar vegetation and waterfowl that use this wetland as a place for wintering, breeding and migratory rest. It is a particularly interesting enclave for the observation of fauna, with the usual presence of species linked to Mediterranean wetlands and the low Jerez countryside. The lagoon is protected as a RENPA Nature Reserve and is also included in the ZEPA network, in the Ramsar list and as a SCI, which underlines its ecological value. Its natural interest has been reinforced with actions to improve and expand the wetland in the surrounding area. The best time to visit is usually autumn, winter and spring, when there is more water and greater bird activity; at sunset the light usually favors observation and photography.
