La Albuera Lake

Description

La Albuera Lake is a small wetland resource linked to the lagoon complex of La Albuera, in the municipality of Llerena (Badajoz), although the sources consulted describe it as a lagoon/lake and do not detail a specific surface area for this particular point. In this sector of Extremadura there is a predominance of agricultural plains, pastures and meadows, within a transitional landscape highly conditioned by the seasonality of water. The most interesting aspect of the visit is its value as a sheet of water in an open rural environment, where the scenic interest is combined with the observation of fauna and flora associated with wetlands and steppe environments. In the informative documentation of the area, the presence of aquatic and steppe birds is highlighted, as well as the relationship of the complex with temporary endorheic lagoons and seasonal flood ponds. Its relevance is not only visual: it is part of the natural system of La Albuera, considered one of the most important lagoon complexes in Extremadura for its biodiversity and for hosting habitats of special interest. It is also included in European environmental protection networks and in the Ramsar list in the official information of the area, which reinforces its ecological value and its role in the conservation of Mediterranean wetlands. For the demanding visitor, the interest lies in understanding it as a part of a very unique agricultural and humid landscape, rather than as a large recreational lake. It is always advisable to locate it precisely in Llerena so as not to confuse it with other enclaves of the same name in the surroundings of La Albuera and the province of Badajoz.
