Description

The Parish Church of San Pedro de Ansó is a fortified church located at the entrance of the town, in the region of La Jacetania, province of Huesca. It is one of the most emblematic heritage buildings of the historic center of Ansó, a town declared a Historic-Artistic Site. Its construction dates back to the 16th century and is of Gothic style, with a clear defensive conception. The temple is built with very solid masonry, has a polygonal apse facing east and preserves elements typical of a church-fortress, such as a machicolation and numerous loopholes. In its exterior also emphasizes the square tower attached to the feet and a front of plateresque language. In the interior, the roofs are resolved with star-shaped ribbed vaults, and the presence of a baroque altarpiece is documented. The local tradition places in this same location a previous temple, which reinforces its historical value as continuity of the cult in one of the oldest nuclei of the valley of Ansó. In addition, the building houses or has housed goods of interest such as the historic organ and pieces of sacred art.
