Church of the Divine Savior

The Church of the Divine Savior is a parish church in Vejer de la Frontera, located in the walled historic center, in the upper part of the town and next to the old defensive enclosure. The temple stands on the site of an ancient mosque, a fact that explains its strategic position and its link with the medieval history of the town. Its construction corresponds to two main stages. The chevet corresponds to a Gothic-Mudejar phase of the 14th century, while the western extension was built in late Gothic between the end of the 15th century and the beginning of the 16th century; some sources extend this reform to the 16th century. The building has a basilica plan with three naves, the central one being higher than the lateral ones. Among its most outstanding patrimonial elements are the medieval chevet, the pointed arches and the tower visible from a good part of the old town. Also mentioned is the main altarpiece, a work attributed to Francisco de Villegas, although part of its artistic heritage was altered by losses and later reforms. Because of its chronology and the mixture of Gothic-Mudejar and late Gothic, the church is one of the main monumental testimonies of the transition between the Islamic and Christian city in Vejer de la Frontera.
