Church of Sant Cristòfol de Beget

The Church of Sant Cristòfol de Beget is a Romanesque parish church located in the village of Beget, in the municipality of Camprodon, in the province of Girona, Catalonia. It is the village’s most significant historic building, closely linked to the medieval development of the settlement, which grew up around this church. Tourism and heritage sources identify it as a 12th-century Romanesque church, with possible origins dating from the 10th to the 13th centuries, according to some popular accounts. It features a Latin cross plan, a semicircular apse, and a bell tower attached to the nave on the south side—features characteristic of Catalan Romanesque architecture. Inside, the highlight is the “Majestad de Beget,” a polychrome Romanesque carving of Christ on the cross considered one of the most notable works of Catalan Romanesque sculpture, along with other historic liturgical elements preserved in the church. The church was designated a Cultural Asset of National Interest and is listed in the Inventory of Architectural Heritage of Catalonia. Due to its historical, artistic, and scenic value, the church is Beget’s most renowned landmark and one of the defining examples of Romanesque architecture in the Ripollès region.
