Description
The Church of San Pedro Apóstol is the main parish church of Santa Gadea del Cid, in Burgos, and one of the most outstanding elements of its historical complex. The building stands in the old town of this medieval village, declared a Site of Cultural Interest in the category of Historic Site, next to the castle and the ancient walls. The sources consulted describe it as a temple of medieval origin: a Romanesque past and a present-day Gothic construction are mentioned, with notable dimensions for a small town. It also indicates the presence of a Renaissance or Plateresque altarpiece, attributed to Juan Picardo, and the existence of a parish museum under the tower, although these data should be taken as the best documented in the local guides consulted. Its location reinforces the defensive and religious role that Santa Gadea del Cid had in the historical frontier between Castile, Navarre and Alava. The church is part of the patrimonial landscape of a fortified village where cobblestone streets, remains of the fortress and other monumental testimonies of medieval times are preserved.
