Description
The Church of San Miguel de Ayllón (Segovia) is a temple of Romanesque typology located in the Plaza Mayor, next to the Town Hall, in the historic center of the town. The tourist sources place it as one of the most significant pieces of heritage of Ayllon for its location and its relationship with the medieval urban organization of the municipality. It dates from the 12th century, within the period of fullness of Romanesque architecture in the area. Its construction preserves features typical of this style, with a cylindrical apse, southern doorway and sculptural elements such as foliated capitals and corbels; some descriptions also place it in a late transition to Gothic. It was the last church to be incorporated into the parish complex linked to Santa María la Mayor and ceased to be desacralized in 1902, when it was put to civil and cultural uses. Later, an attached construction that concealed its exterior was removed, allowing the architectural interpretation of the building to be recovered. At present it functions as a cultural and tourist space, with uses for exhibitions, concerts and theatrical performances, and in the summer season it has housed the Tourist Office. In its interior are also documented burials of historical interest, associated with important people of the town.
