Description

The Church of San Miguel Arcángel is a parish church in Jerez de los Caballeros, in the province of Badajoz (Extremadura), located in the Plaza de España, in the historic center of the municipality, within the monumental complex of Jerez. Due to its location and local tradition, it is also referred to as the temple of San Miguel, although its patrimonial use is clearly identified as a church. It is a building constructed between the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, with a configuration linked to the late Gothic, to which was added in later times a baroque tower of great visual presence, built in the mid-eighteenth century. This combination of architectural phases explains the interest of the monument within the historic center of Jerez de los Caballeros. Among its most outstanding elements are the Baroque tower, some seventy meters high, and an interior with altarpieces of notable relief, in addition to the main altar, the painted dome and the choir stalls, according to the available descriptions. The most common reference places it as one of the most valuable temples of the local historic center, in a municipality declared a historic-artistic site for the richness of its monuments. Its patrimonial interest derives, therefore, from the superposition of medieval and baroque phases and its role as an urban landmark in the center of Jerez de los Caballeros. In the sources provided, there is no specific cataloguing as an Asset of Cultural Interest for this church in particular, so it should be described with caution as a historic temple of great local and regional value.
