Description
The Church of San Martín de Tours is a Catholic parish church of medieval origin located in Trujillo, Cáceres, in one of the corners of the Plaza Mayor and in the historic urban environment of the town. Although in some tourist sources it also appears as a hermitage in its foundational phase, the current typology is that of a parish church. Its origin dates back to the 14th century and the main structure was developed during the 15th and 16th centuries, with a culmination of important modifications in the second half of the 16th century, around 1564. The sources consulted describe a prolonged evolution, with an initial simpler structure and later reforms that consolidated the building that is preserved today. From the patrimonial point of view, its tower, choir and nave stand out, elements cited in studies on the building as parts worked on by Sancho de Cabrera. Its relevance in the urban configuration of the Plaza Mayor of Trujillo, where the temple occupies a very visible and symbolic position, is also noted. Overall, it is one of the most relevant historical temples of Trujillo, linked to the medieval growth and Renaissance transformation of the city, and with both religious and patrimonial interest for its integration into the historic center.
