Description
The Church of San Martin de Almonaster la Real is a religious temple of Catholic worship located in the town of Almonaster la Real, in the province of Huelva, Andalusia. It is identified as a parish church, although in some tourist directories it also appears as a hermitage. It is linked to the historical heritage of the municipality and has been listed as an Asset of Cultural Interest since 1993. Its origin is medieval and its factory responds to a Gothic-Mudejar construction made between the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. Over time it received later reforms of Renaissance and Baroque periods, which explains the coexistence of elements from different artistic periods. The specialized bibliography considers it a building of special singularity within the ecclesiastical patrimony of Huelva. Among its most outstanding features is its hall church structure, with three naves and polygonal chancel, as well as a pointed barrel roof that has been pointed out as an uncommon element in the religious architecture of the area. Also mentioned is the singularity of the doorway at the base, associated with Manueline influences. In the historical context of Almonaster la Real, the temple is part of a heritage complex of great value within the municipality, known for the preservation of medieval monuments and the continuity of its religious use. Its location on the main street of the historic center reinforces its role as a monumental and devotional reference of the town.
