Iglesia de San Bartolomé

The Church of San Bartolomé is a parish church in Jerez de los Caballeros (Badajoz), located within the Historic Complex, in the northern part of the walled area and near the old Alconchel Gate. It has been declared an Asset of Cultural Interest with the category of Monument, and the protection decree includes the church, the bell tower, the sacristy, adjoining outbuildings and a small north courtyard. Its origin dates back to the 15th century, although the building was remodeled and enlarged on several occasions throughout its history. The consulted documentation relates it to an old hermitage or previous basilica, on which the current temple was built, so it presents a complex constructive evolution and not a homogeneous factory. From the patrimonial point of view, the bell tower stands out especially, for its dominant presence and for the decorative and chromatic richness pointed out in the official declaration. The complex also conserves the sacristy and other annexed spaces, which reinforces its interest as a relevant piece of Jerez's religious heritage. The church is part of the monumental landscape of Jerez de los Caballeros, a town with a strong historical and defensive imprint, in which this temple stands out as one of the most recognizable architectural landmarks of the old town.
