Description
The Church of Nuestra Señora del Rosario is the parish church of Bubión, in the Alpujarra of Granada, located in the lower part of the town, next to the Plaza Doctor Pérez Ramón and in the surroundings of the ravine. It is a temple of clear parochial function and of strong landscape presence within the historical set of the town. Its origin dates back to the 16th century and the tourist bibliography describes it as a construction of Mudejar tradition. The church was built in the context of the Christian reorganization after the conquest of the Kingdom of Granada, on the site of an old mosque, according to various sources consulted. The building has undergone several transformations over time: it was affected by the rebellion of the Alpujarras and by the earthquakes of the 19th century, which forced partial or almost total rebuilding in later stages. This history explains its present appearance, the result of successive reconstructions rather than a single constructive moment. Among its most cited elements are the single nave, the main doorway and the tower, which is linked to the remains of an ancient minaret or tower from the Islamic period. Also mentioned is its role as an urban and visual landmark in Bubión, due to its relationship with the old cemetery and the traditional layout of the municipality.
