Description
The Church of Nuestra Señora de la Piedad is the parish church of Alpuente, in the province of Valencia, located in the Plaza de la Iglesia in the historic center, with the coordinates indicated. The patrimonial denomination also appears as archpriestly church in inventories and monumental repertoires of the Valencian Community. It is a single nave church built between the 13th and 15th centuries, in the context of the Christian reorganization of the town after the conquest of Jaime I. Its construction responds to a medieval architecture in which successive constructive phases are recognized, and its octagonal bell tower preserves the oldest remains, dating from the fourteenth century. Among its most outstanding heritage elements is precisely this octagonal bell tower, one of the most unique features of the building. In the 17th century the Communion chapel was added, which confirms the continuity of use and the devotional transformations of the temple throughout the Modern Age. The building is part of the monumental ensemble of Alpuente, a historic town with a strong medieval character, together with other assets of the municipality such as the castle, the wall and the Aljama tower. Due to its urban implantation and its historical trajectory, it is one of the religious and patrimonial references of the old town.
