Description
The Church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción is the parish church of Viniegra de Abajo, in La Rioja, located on Calle de los Huertos, very close to the center of the town. Although the resource is sometimes generically referred to as a church or hermitage, the heritage documentation identifies it as the parish church of the town. Its construction dates mainly from the 16th century, with later additions that shaped its current appearance. The building is built in ashlar masonry and ashlar of reddish stone, a very characteristic material of the traditional architecture of the area and that gives it its most recognizable exterior tone. Among its outstanding patrimonial elements are a Romanesque baptismal font, previous to the present temple, and a classicist altarpiece, of special artistic interest. The presence of these pieces indicates the historical continuity of worship in the village and the accumulation of movable goods from different periods. Overall, it is a temple of Renaissance roots, with later construction phases, which is part of the most representative religious heritage of Viniegra de Abajo and retains a central role in the historical and devotional identity of the town.
