Church of Our Lady of the Assumption

The Church of Our Lady of the Assumption of Candelario is the main parish church of the town, located in the historic center of Candelario, in the province of Salamanca, Castilla y León, at coordinates 40.36829, -5.74432. The heritage file and municipal documentation identify it as the most outstanding religious building in the village, although in some tourist sources it is also generically referred to as a hermitage. It is a temple of complex construction, with a wide chronology between the XIV and XVIII centuries according to the consulted informative sources. The Town Council of Candelario indicates that in its construction Mudejar, Baroque, Romanesque and Gothic styles are mixed, so it must be understood as a building of historical evolution and not as a work of a single stage. Local historical tradition also indicates that the building underwent reconstruction after a partial collapse in the 17th century, a fact that explains part of its current appearance. Due to its chronology, its stylistic mix and its role as a religious and patrimonial reference of Candelario, the church is one of the most representative landmarks of the historical complex of the municipality, recognized as an asset of cultural interest.
