Description
The Church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción is the parish church of Briones, in La Rioja, located in the main square of the historic center, very close to the coordinates indicated. It is a large ashlar church, with a hall floor plan and three naves of equal height, with an octagonal chancel of three panels, making it one of the most important heritage landmarks of the town. Its construction belongs to the 16th century and the main complex responds to the style of the Catholic Monarchs and the Renaissance, with late Gothic solutions in the starred ribbed vaults and pointed arches. The chevet was already erected around 1521; later the stonemasons Miguel de Ezquioga and Juan Martínez de Mutio intervened in different phases of the work. The Baroque tower, added in the 18th century, and the interior structure of three naves with cylindrical fasciated pillars stand out among its patrimonial elements. The church was declared an Asset of Cultural Interest in the Monument category, which confirms its relevance within the religious heritage of La Rioja. In addition to its artistic value, the building preserves its role as an urban and religious landmark in Briones, articulating the square and the town's monumental ensemble.
