Description
The Church of the Nativity of Durro is a Romanesque church located in the village of Durro, in the municipality of La Vall de Boí, province of Lleida, Catalonia. It is part of the group of Romanesque churches of the Vall de Boí, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, and is also identified as a church/hermitage in the local tourist directories. Its construction dates back to the 13th century, although the church has undergone later alterations between the 16th and 18th centuries. It is a single-nave building, with a semicircular apse, and preserves a bell tower that responds to the characteristic model of the Romanesque style of the valley. Among the documented heritage elements are the sculpted doorway, the portico and the bell tower, in addition to the historical transformations that incorporated Gothic chapels and a Baroque sacristy. Inside, the Romanesque image of Nicodemus is preserved, coming from an ancient set of the Descent from the Cross. The church reflects the medieval importance of Durro within the Vall de Boí and is one of the most representative temples of the Catalan Pyrenean Romanesque. Its location, at an altitude of 1,386 meters, reinforces the landscape and heritage value of the village as a whole.
