Description

The Hoces del Río Huécar is a natural canyon approximately 250 meters deep, formed by the erosion of the Huécar River on Upper Cretaceous rocks as it flows through the city of Cuenca, in Castilla-La Mancha. This narrow, vertical gorge, with walls of subhorizontal rock layers that fold into an anticline structure in the city center, forms the exceptional geological setting that supports the city’s historic district. From the viewpoints integrated into the urban landscape, visitors can admire iconic sights such as the Hanging Houses, the Convent of San Pablo, and the complete silhouette of the old town, where the architecture rests directly on the hinge of the anticline. The gorge stands out not only for its geomorphological value—with strata ranging from the Cenomanian to the Campanian periods visible on the escarpments—but also for its scenic and cultural significance, as it is an inseparable part of the site designated as a World Heritage City. The best time to visit is at sunrise or sunset, when the light strikes the canyon walls from the side, highlighting the texture of the Cretaceous rock formations and the silhouettes of the historic buildings.

How to get there

By car: Enter the city of Cuenca via Highway N-320 or A-3, and from downtown, head to the Barrio del Castillo or Travesía del Clavel (meeting point for guided tours), where the trails leading to the gorge begin. Parking: There are parking areas in the Barrio del Castillo and on Severo Catalina Street, near the Plaza Mayor; parking is free in most outlying areas, although some areas near the historic center may charge fees. Trail: The Hoces Peripheral Trail (SL-CU10) is a 4-kilometer circular route with 222 meters of elevation gain, which circles the historic center from the Barrio de San Antón to the Barrio del Castillo; it is an easy hike and takes approximately 2 hours to complete. Footwear: Comfortable and sturdy hiking shoes are recommended, suitable for traditional trails and paths with moderate elevation changes. Best time to visit: The ideal months are April through June and September through October, when temperatures are moderate and the vegetation is at its best. Notes: The gorge is accessible via trails and overlooks integrated into the urban landscape; there are no serious hazards, but caution should be exercised in areas with steeper slopes; access is free and there are no temporary closures, though it is recommended to follow the marked trails.
