The UNESCO Sierras Subbéticas Global Geopark is a protected natural area covering more than 32,000 hectares located in the south of the province of Córdoba, in the heart of Andalusia. Geologically, it is an exceptional example of the Outer Subbetic Range of the Baetic System, formed from deep-sea floors that rose south of the Iberian Peninsula during the Mesozoic Era, embodying a geological history spanning approximately 250 million years. The predominant limestone rocks, a legacy of the ancient Tethys Sea, have been shaped by weathering, creating a stunning karst landscape featuring lapiaz, sinkholes, canyons, poljes, and a vast network of chasms and caves beneath the surface. From the geopark’s visitor sites, one can observe a topography of towering limestone formations that harbor crucial freshwater reserves, feeding springs that supply half of the province of Córdoba. The area’s richness is evident in the abundance of ammonite fossils—extinct cephalopods with spiral shells—which, due to their diversity and abundance, serve as the Geopark’s official emblem. In addition, the area is home to Europe’s first mycological garden, known as “La Trufa,” and serves as a refuge for endemic plant species in its highest elevations. The Geopark is protected under multiple designations: it was designated a Natural Park in 1988, a Special Protection Area for Birds, a Special Area of Conservation within the Natura 2000 Network, and, since 2006, a Geopark in the European Network, before being recognized as a UNESCO Global Geopark in 2015. The recent karst landscape, along with prehistoric settlements and medieval castles nestled in the mountain ranges, offers a glimpse into the history of the heart of Andalusia through millennia-old remains. The best time to visit depends on your purpose: spring and fall offer optimal conditions for hiking and observing the flora, while clear winter days allow you to appreciate more clearly the complexity of the karst formations and the depth of the chasms.
