Fragas do Eume is a large Atlantic riverside forest protected as a Natural Park since 1997, with just over 9,000 hectares distributed between Cabanas, A Capela, As Pontes de García Rodríguez, Monfero and Pontedeume. The Eume River has carved a deep valley here, with steep slopes that reach steep slopes and preserve a very dense and humid vegetation, typical of one of the best preserved Atlantic forests in Europe. What the visitor finds are compact masses of hardwoods, ferns, mosses and shady environments, with the course of the river as a common thread. From the trails and viewpoints you can see meanders, slopes enclosed by trees and, in several accesses, the monastery of Caaveiro and other historical traces integrated into the landscape. The general sensation is that of a very embedded valley of great ecological value, with a remarkable diversity of flora and fauna associated with the permanent humidity. Its relevance is not only scenic: it is an emblematic natural area of Galicia and one of the great references of Atlantic forest in the peninsula. The presence of ancient monasteries, bridges and traditional paths adds cultural interest to the tour. The best time to visit it is usually spring and autumn, when the flow and vegetation offer its most expressive aspect; on cloudy days or after recent rains the atmosphere is especially intense.
