Fraga do Eume designates the large Atlantic riverside forest that accompanies the Eume River in the heart of the Fragas do Eume Natural Park, a protected area of some 9,125 hectares created in 1997 in the province of A Coruña. It is one of the best examples of well-preserved coastal forest in Europe, with wet slopes, shady banks, ferns, mosses and a very dense tree cover that keeps the environment cool even in summer. What the visitor finds here is not an isolated viewpoint but a continuous landscape: a riverbed, paths through the foliage, bridges, walkways and clearings from which the narrow relief of the valley and the force of the water in times of flooding can be perceived. Inside the park there is also the Caaveiro monastery and several observation points and pedestrian routes that help to understand the relationship between natural heritage and historical footprint. The area is listed as an autonomous natural park and is one of the most cited references when talking about the Atlantic forest in Galicia. The visit gains a lot with humid weather or after light rains, when the greenery and small streams are more alive; in summer, however, it is advisable to go early to avoid heat, influx and access restrictions at the most visited points. Due to its character of closed forest, the experience depends a lot on the chosen route: there are smooth stretches next to the river and others with slopes, so the interest is both in the forest mass and in the landscape of the valley and in the heritage elements scattered around.
