The Fervenza de Vilagocende, also known as Seimeira de Vilagocende, is a free-falling waterfall located on the Porteliña River, within the municipality of A Fonsagrada in the province of Lugo, Galicia. With a height of approximately 50 to 54 meters, it is considered one of the tallest free-falling waterfalls in Galicia, surpassing in height other well-known waterfalls such as the Cadoiro do Toxa in Silleda. The waterfall forms where a rock fissure cuts across the valley from north to south, creating a vertical wall that the Porteliña River must “jump” over to continue its course toward the Lamas River and ultimately the Navia River. From the viewing point, visitors can observe the Porteliña River’s imposing cascade in all its splendor, surrounded by a native riparian forest of oaks (carballos), birches (bidueiros), and alders (amieiros). A wooden walkway allows visitors to get almost to the base of the waterfall, while at the top there is a lookout point offering a complete panoramic view of the cascade. The area is equipped with tables, benches, and a fountain, and a wooden bridge provides access to the opposite bank, where the remains of an old stone mill can be seen. The waterfall is protected as a cultural heritage site and is a must-see for lovers of Galician nature, featured in specialized guidebooks such as Galicia Máxica and ViajarGalicia. The hiking trail that runs through the area is easy and just 1 to 2 kilometers long. The best time to visit is in the spring, when the snowmelt increases the water flow, or in the fall, when the riverside forest displays its most vibrant colors, although the waterfall is spectacular at any time of year.
