The Fervenza de Santa Leocadia, also known as Pozo das Campanas by locals, is a waterfall approximately 6 meters high located in the municipality of Mazaricos, in the province of A Coruña, Galicia. Physically, it is a waterfall with two distinct drops, formed by the Donosiño (or Nosiño) River—a tributary of the Santa Baia River—in a narrow, deep ravine surrounded by lush vegetation and moss-covered rocks. This secluded and wonderful spot is hidden deep in nature, offering a spectacular view from the observation point, where the water plunges in two streams, creating an evocative and tranquil landscape. Its cultural significance is linked to a local legend that tells how some thieves, while attempting to steal the bell from the small Romanesque chapel of Santa Leocadia located nearby, slipped under the weight of the bell as they crossed the river, causing a massive sinkhole that gave rise to the waterfall. The chapel, described as either Baroque or Romanesque depending on the source, is a notable architectural feature in the parish of Chacín. The waterfall is one of five on the Mazaricos Waterfalls Trail, and it is the most easily accessible of them all, suitable for all visitors and children, although it is not adapted to allow a clear view of the waterfall without descending the uneven path. The best time to visit is during spring or fall, when the river carries more water and the vegetation is lushest, although in summer it also forms attractive pools. The light in the morning or late afternoon particularly illuminates the moss and rocks, highlighting the natural beauty of the surroundings. It is an ideal spot for a peaceful, easy visit, where you can enjoy nature and local history in a secluded and serene setting.
