Description
The Estany de Sant Maurici is a mountain lake in the National Park of Aigüestortes i Estany de Sant Maurici, in a high mountain environment of remarkable scenic and environmental value. It is located in the Pyrenean area of Lleida and, for the visitor departing from Garòs, is a natural reference of the first order linked to the network of accesses to the valley. It is a natural resource of lacustrine typology, integrated in a landscape of glacial origin and surrounded by abrupt reliefs, forest masses and mountain meadows. Its interest lies in the combination of water, rock and high altitude vegetation, which offers a very representative image of the central Pyrenees and the protected environments of the area. Its main relevance is environmental, being part of a national park, one of the most demanding protection figures of the Spanish system. This condition explains its value for the conservation of high mountain ecosystems and for the orderly visit of nature, hiking and landscape observation. In tourist reference sources, it also appears as one of the best-known enclaves of the Aigüestortes environment, cited for its accessibility and its interest as a hiking and scenic landmark.
