Description
The Ermita del Cristo del Humilladero is a hermitage or devotional church located in Llerena, in the province of Badajoz, Extremadura, next to the town center and at coordinates 38.23769, -6.01631. It is a religious heritage resource linked to the entrance landscape or historical periphery of the town, associated with the invocation of the Cristo del Humilladero. The consulted sources place its origin in the XVI century and indicate that the work was erected in two stages, with a masonry factory that responds to the popular religious architecture of historical tradition. It is also indicated that the presence of the confraternity of the Holy Sacrament was approved in 1576, which confirms its roots in the local religiosity since modern times. The present building was rebuilt and completed in 1960 after the demolition of the previous chapel in the fifties, affected by technical deficiencies, the ruin of arches and roof, the earthquakes of the last century and the consequences of the Civil War. In its interior stands out the image of the Lord or Christ of the Humilladero, very venerated in the locality. For its typology, history and devotional function, the hermitage is part of the religious heritage of Llerena and preserves the value of a traditional humilladero, linked to the entrance of the town and the historical memory of the community.
