Description
The Hermitage of Santa Margalida is a hermitage or church of religious character located in the municipality of Bagergue, in the Aran Valley (Lleida, Catalonia), on the outskirts of the town and in the area of the Liat road. The heritage resource is located at coordinates 42.72845, 0.91672, and is part of the tourist and cultural elements linked to the village. The sources consulted describe it as a Romanesque hermitage dating from the XII-XIII centuries, so it is part of the medieval religious architecture of the Aran Valley. This chronological and stylistic ascription is the most precise reference available in the sources reviewed; no more detailed data on later construction phases or specific interventions can be found in them. It is a sanctuary of local devotion, associated with an annual pilgrimage in July that conserves its traditional function in the religious life of the place. Its location, somewhat removed from the hamlet and in visual relation with the mountain landscape, reinforces its value as a heritage landmark in the Bagergue area. The documentation consulted does not clearly show any outstanding interior artistic elements, so it is advisable to avoid unverified attributions. There is mention of a reconstruction commemorating its six decades, which suggests a recent history of heritage conservation, although without replacing its medieval origin.
