Description
The Hermitage of Sant Quirc de Durro is a Romanesque hermitage located in the mountain of Durro, in the municipality of Durro, municipality of La Vall de Boí, in the region of Alta Ribagorça, Lleida, Catalonia. Its location, at an altitude of about 1,500 meters above sea level and over the valley, makes it a very prominent landmark of the Pyrenean rural environment. It is a building of medieval origin, built in the 12th century. The sources consulted indicate that it was renovated in later times, incorporating Baroque contributions, although it maintains the Romanesque essence of its construction. Its typology is that of a small mountain church or hermitage, historically linked to the landscape and community traditions of Durro. Among its most important heritage elements are the small nave, the single apse and the two-eyed belfry, typical of the local Romanesque style. Inside, the coexistence of pieces and references from different artistic periods is documented, with the presence of a Romanesque altar frontal, a Gothic image of Sant Quirc and Santa Julita, and a Baroque altarpiece. The hermitage is part of the group of Romanesque churches of the Boí Valley, inscribed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site in 2000. It has also been listed as an Asset of Cultural Interest since 1992, which confirms its historical, artistic and territorial relevance within the Catalan heritage.
