The Chapel of Nuestra Señora de la Anunciada is a small chapel located in the municipality of Urueña, in the province of Valladolid, outside the walled enclosure and in a small valley near the town. It is one of the municipality’s most valuable heritage sites and is linked to the former Monastery of San Pedro and San Pablo de Cubillas, which dates back to a Mozarabic tradition predating the current building. The chapel was built in the 12th century and is in the Early Romanesque or Lombard Romanesque style, with ornamentation of Catalan origin. It is considered the only fully preserved structure of this architectural type in Castile and León, which gives it exceptional significance within the region’s medieval heritage. Its layout features a basilica-style plan with three naves, a transept, and three semicircular apses, as well as a dome over the transept. The building conveys the sobriety and clarity characteristic of the Romanesque style, reinforced by its compact volume and the exterior articulation typical of the Lombard style. Among the notable documented heritage elements is the Romanesque carving of the Virgin of the Annunciation, linked to local worship and the town’s traditional celebrations. The chapel thus maintains its religious and devotional function, in addition to its value as a historical and artistic landmark of Urueña.
