Virgen de Gracia Chapel

The Ermita de la Virgen de Gracia is a small hermitage or church of popular character located at the entrance of Valverde de los Arroyos, in Guadalajara, within the scope of the black architecture of Castilla-La Mancha. It sits at the coordinates indicated and is part of the heritage of the village, closely linked to the traditional use of slate and wood in their buildings. The sources consulted place it in the 19th century and describe it as a slate construction. Its origin is related to the help of two neighbors of the town who had been missionaries in the Philippines, according to regional tourist information. The Town Hall also points out that the hermitage was associated until the mid-1990s with the municipal cemetery, today integrated into its immediate surroundings. Among its outstanding heritage elements are the remains of a small altarpiece, destroyed during the Civil War, and the inscriptions on the floor that recall the ancient funerary use of the enclosure. The restoration of the canopy and the access pillars in 2015 is also documented, confirming its recent conservation and its value as a local testimony of popular religiosity and community memory.
