Description
The Monteagudo de las Vicarías Reservoir is a medium-sized artificial wetland, linked to the river Nágima and to an old irrigation infrastructure that was built in the 19th century and later enlarged. With about 100 hectares of water and a capacity of about 10 hm3, it stands out for its unique origin: it is not a conventional dam, but a storage vessel used and reformed to regulate the water of the region. From its banks one can see a large body of water embedded in a landscape of dry land, gentle hills and edges of marsh vegetation. Its visual interest is not in large waterfalls or spectacular formations, but in the contrast between the water, the birds and the steppe environment of southeastern Soria. It is a good place to observe aquatic and migratory birds, especially in March and September, when the ornithological movement is greater. The site is recognized as a ZEPA and is part of the Natura 2000 Network, which underlines its ecological value within the province. The City Council also points out the existence of an accessible observatory and a viewpoint in the upper area of the reservoir, making it a useful destination for both hikers and birdwatchers. The best time to visit is in spring and early autumn, when the level of bird activity is usually higher and the light is cleaner for photography and scenery.
How to get there
By car: from Monteagudo de las Vicarías, take the exit towards the surroundings of the reservoir along the local roads that go towards the reservoir; the usual access is from the area of the Nuestra Señora de Bienvenida hermitage, following a rural road. Parking: There is no formal parking lot; vehicles are usually left on the authorized parking areas or at the beginning of the trail. Trail: circular route of about 7.2 km, with an approximate positive difference in altitude of 152 m and a 1.5-2 h walk. Footwear: light hiking or sports shoes with good soles. Best season: March, April, September and October. Warnings: terrain exposed to the sun and wind; it is advisable to respect the tranquility of the birdlife and check the condition of the paths after rainfall.
