Description
Guadarranque Dam is an artificial reservoir located in Castellar de la Frontera, in the province of Cadiz, on the Guadarranque riverbed. It was built in 1965 and has an approximate surface area of 435 hectares, with a capacity of about 78-90 hm3 and a length of river affected of about 11 km. The dam is made of loose materials, with a straight plant, 72 m on foundations and 235 m of crest. Its interest is not only hydraulic: it regulates inflows from the Guadarranque basin and stores water for human supply, industrial use and irrigation. The environment combines sheet of water, slopes and landscape of transition between the mountain and the agricultural and forest areas of the Campo de Gibraltar, with a very clear territorial reading from the accesses near the nucleus of Castellar. In the local and environmental information consulted, it appears linked to the Natural Park of Los Alcornocales, which reinforces its landscape and ecological relevance. It also mentions a limited public use and access with permission, so your visit should be understood more as contemplation of the landscape and observation of the water system than as a space for intensive recreation. Castellar's guides and information resources also highlight its role in the economic transformation of the municipality since the 1960s.
