Description

El Morrón is a natural elevation in the municipality of Alcalá del Júcar, in the province of Albacete, which forms part of the abrupt relief associated with the gorge of the Júcar River. It is described as a formation of eroded sandstone, with a very marked landscape, integrated in an environment of slopes and cliffs characteristic of the valley. Due to its position on the margin of the valley, it offers ample views of the hamlet and the fluvial landscape of Alcalá del Júcar, with the combination of mountain, canyon and river that makes this town unique. In the area also runs the PR-AB 17 trail, known as the Sendero del Morrón, which links the village, hills and path along the Júcar. It is of special interest for its landscape and geomorphological value: it is a representative point of the modeling by erosion on sandy materials in an environment of strong topographic contrast. Local tourist references place it among the most visible natural landmarks of the municipality and point out its use as a viewpoint and orientation reference in the territory. In the documentation consulted there is no specific figure of protection for this resource with the name of El Morrón in Alcalá del Júcar, so its relevance is based above all on its natural interest, its presence on hiking routes and its role within the emblematic landscape of the locality.

How to get there

By car: reach Alcalá del Júcar on the CM-3201 and enter the town center; the usual start of the Sendero del Morrón is near the bridge and the ascent to the castle, following the PR-AB 17 signposted roads. Parking: there is a car park next to the river as you enter the town. Parking: there is a parking lot next to the river at the entrance to the village; a source cites it as a guarded paid parking lot (2 €/24 h) and another free one next to it, as well as a small parking lot across the bridge.[3 Trail: linear or circular route according to variant, with published references of about 5 km in the described section or 15.5 km for the complete return Las Eras-Tolosa-Alcalá; published elevation gain of about 530 m in one of the descriptions. Footwear: closed shoes with good soles, especially if walking on cobblestone streets and trail sections. Best time: spring, autumn and dry days. Warnings: on Sunday there may be parking restrictions due to the market; the initial climb is steep and the signage is by white-yellow PR. Best time: spring and autumn and dry days.
