Description
The Cueva de los Murciélagos Ecomuseum is an interpretive museum linked to visits to the Cueva de los Murciélagos cave in Zuheros (Córdoba), located along the CO-6210 highway and within the Sierras Subbéticas Natural Park. Its purpose is to provide reception, information, and interpretation regarding the natural, cultural, and ethnographic values of the site, as well as to serve as an access point for tourist visits to the cave. The cave is one of the municipality’s major heritage landmarks due to its archaeological and rupestrian significance. Sources indicate human occupation dating back to the Middle Paleolithic, with remains and artifacts spanning prehistory, particularly notable for Neolithic and Chalcolithic cave paintings, as well as human remains and traces from later periods. It is not a historic building from the medieval or modern era, but rather a contemporary museum facility associated with a natural and archaeological site. The cave complex has been protected as a Natural Monument of Andalusia since 2001, with a mixed geological, biotic, and ecocultural classification, and is also listed as a site protected under state historical heritage legislation. The information provided about the cave highlights the accessible tour route and the value of its galleries and chambers, as well as the role of the ecomuseum as a space for interpreting the site and the landscape of the Sierras Subbéticas. Due to its exact location in Zuheros, at the coordinates indicated, it constitutes one of the municipality’s most significant heritage tourism resources.
