The Corrubedo dune complex and the lagoons of Carregal and Vixán is a natural coastal area formed by a large mobile dune, Corrubedo beach and two lagoons separated by the sand bar: Vixán, freshwater, and Carregal, saltwater. The main dune is just over 1 km long and about 20 m high, and is considered the largest mobile dune in Galicia and one of the most prominent in the northwest peninsular. The set originated in the Quaternary and combines sand, marshes, reed beds and water sheet in a very unique ecological mosaic. From the itineraries and walkways, the scale of the dune system, the advance of the sand and the transition between beach, dune and wetland can be clearly appreciated. In the lagoon of Vixán waterfowl and marsh vegetation are often seen; in Carregal the relationship between the tides, the coastal bar and coastal dynamics is better understood. The visit allows you to read in a small space a landscape in movement, with strong geological and biological value. It is protected as a natural park and also appears in environmental figures of European and international scope. It is one of the most visited natural areas of Galicia, but the dune should not be stepped on outside the authorized routes. The best time is usually when the weather is stable and the light is clear, between spring and autumn; at dawn and dusk the sand and the lagoons offer the strongest visual contrast.
