Diapiro de Poza

Description

The Diapiro de Poza is a large geological structure of saline materials outcropping on the surface, visible as a circular depression reminiscent of a crater. In its center appears the Castelar, with outcrops of ophite and salt, and the whole reaches about 2.5 km in diameter, making it one of the most unique saline landscapes in the province of Burgos.[11 From the point of visit, the closed shape of the relief, the slopes that descend towards the basin and the environment of the old salt mines, where there are still remains of exploitation and storage linked to an activity documented since Roman times and maintained until the twentieth century, are well appreciated. The reading of the landscape is clear: an exceptional geology that has conditioned the economic history and layout of the village. The informative bibliography and geological inventories place it among the most spectacular diapirs in Spain, and the place also has heritage recognition as a Historic Site in the area of the Poza de la Sal Salt Flats. The visit is especially interesting with side light, early in the morning or late afternoon, when the circular relief and the slopes can be read more clearly. If you have time, it is advisable to combine the observation of the diapir with the interpretation center and the tour of the rehabilitated salt pans, which help to understand the relationship between geology, landscape and salt exploitation.

How to get there

By car: reach Poza de la Sal by CL-663 or BU-502 to the town center; from the center, follow the signs to the salt pans and the Interpretation Center. Parking: there are parking areas in the town and next to the visitor area, although availability may vary on weekends and high season. Trail: Access to the main observation points is short; there is no single official itinerary with verifiable distance and slope. Footwear: comfortable shoes with grippy soles are recommended, especially if descending on trails or uneven ground. Best season: spring and autumn, for milder temperatures and better visibility of the relief. Warnings: the environment combines urban areas, slopes and old salt installations; it is advisable to respect closures, not to leave the authorized itineraries and to be extremely cautious after rain or in windy weather.
