The Salnitre Caves are a visitable cavity excavated in the conglomerates of Montserrat, in the municipality of Collbató, within the environment of the Montserrat massif. The touristic route takes advantage of galleries, rooms and conduits modeled by the dissolution and the work of water in a very characteristic rock of the mountain, with formations of speleothems such as stalactites, stalagmites and columns. From the entrance, the abrupt nature of the place is well perceived: the visit requires an external climb of steps before entering the subway world. Inside, the cave offers a very closed and humid mineral landscape, with passages on a human scale and points where the lighting highlights the textures of the rock and the capricious forms of the relief. The place is also known as Coves de Collbató or Coves de Montserrat, and is mentioned in nature and geology guides for its scenic and scientific interest. The area is also listed as a Site of Geological Interest in specialized inventories, which reinforces its value as an enclave of interpretation of the Montserrat massif. The best time to visit is usually out of the central hours, when the outside light and the influx of people are more favorable. In any season it is advisable to wear firm footwear, because the ground can be damp and the route combines sections of stairs and underpass.
