Description
La Cruz del Saludo is a viewpoint and cross located at the access to Ujué, in Navarra, at the point where the roads that go up from Tafalla, San Martín de Unx, Sangüesa and Murillo el Fruto meet. It is a place of reception and meeting before entering the town, closely linked to the pilgrimages and processions to the sanctuary of the Virgin of Ujué. The main interest of the enclave lies in its scenic and ceremonial function. From here you get the first clear view of the hamlet of Ujué, settled in height on the mountain range, in an environment of open and dominant relief. The village is known precisely for its position as a watchtower over the Navarra Middle Zone and for the wide panoramic views it offers on clear days towards the Ebro River Bank and the pre-Pyrenean strip. The cross is also a well-known element of local identity, because it marks the meeting point for pilgrims and visitors before the final ascent to the historic center. According to local informative sources, the cross was erected in the 14th century and has been restored after suffering damage, so it combines heritage and devotional value with its role as a landmark at the entrance to the village.
