Description
The Convent of the Dominican Fathers of Caleruega is a convent and monastic complex linked to the memory of Saint Dominic de Guzmán, born in this town in Burgos in 1170. It is part of the great Dominican monumental complex of the municipality, together with the monastery of the Dominican Mothers, in the historical environment of Caleruega, in the province of Burgos. The present building sits on the traditional Dominican site and is linked to the foundation of the Royal Monastery of Santo Domingo de Caleruega, considered a central place of Dominican spirituality in Castile. Tourist sources and the Dominican community itself point out that the complex preserves its religious and welcoming function, as well as integrating the Caleruega Tourist Office within the convent itself. In the patrimonial complex, the devotional value of the place, the relationship with the Order of Preachers and, according to the tourist documentation, the presence of medieval sepulchral remains linked to the Infanta Leonor, daughter of Alfonso X the Wise, stand out. The enclave is also a historical reference of the municipality due to its direct association with the figure of Saint Dominic and its insertion in the stone landscape characteristic of Caleruega.
