Description
The Convent of the Assumption of Calatrava is a convent-monastery of Almagro, in the province of Ciudad Real, integrated in the historical complex of the town and located outside the old walled enclosure, next to other historical convents of the city. Its coordinates coincide practically with the official location published for the property. Its origin dates back to the first half of the 16th century: construction was ratified in 1524 and continued after several interruptions due to lack of funds, with a decisive contribution by Gutierre de Padilla in 1543 to complete the work. In the patrimonial sources, the church is described as a part that was built first and it is pointed out that the whole responds to a Gothic structure with Renaissance elements. Among its most outstanding elements are the tower, with a rectangular floor plan and a brick bell tower, and the cloister, considered the most interesting part of the complex. The cloister has two levels of classical orders, Plateresque decoration on doors and windows, a sandstone balustrade and a staircase with stone handrails in the Gothic style. The building was declared a Historic Monument in 1851 and is also listed as an Asset of Cultural Interest in the heritage information consulted. Its relevance is explained by its link to the Order of Calatrava and for being one of the main testimonies of the Renaissance Almagro convent, preserved and visitable as a heritage resource of the first order.
