Description

Charca La Torre is a small wetland associated with the agricultural landscape of the region of Trujillo, in the center of the province of Cáceres. The available references place it as a natural pond with marsh vegetation, in an environment of plains and traditional uses of the territory, rather than as a large reservoir or a mountain lagoon. Its interest lies in the ecological value of these seasonal or permanent water points, which concentrate life in a dry environment for much of the year. From the surroundings of the place an open landscape is observed, with sheet of water, low banks and vegetation linked to the flooding; it is a good place for the discreet observation of aquatic birds and fauna associated with wetlands. The sources consulted link it to the presence of aquatic ornithofauna of international importance, within the network of protected areas of Extremadura. The pond is also listed as a SPA in the regional information, which reinforces its interest for birdlife and the conservation of wetland habitats in the interior of Extremadura. No reliable data have been found on interpretive itineraries or specific equipment, so it should be understood as a quiet observation site, without major infrastructure. The best time to visit it is usually the season of greatest bird activity, especially in autumn, winter and spring, when water and migratory movements increase the interest of the landscape. In summer, the presence of water can be more variable depending on rainfall.

How to get there

By car: from Trujillo, take the exit towards La Aldea del Obispo and continue along the local roads in the area; the cartographic reference places the pond northwest of Trujillo, near La Aldea del Obispo. Parking: there is no parking lot; it is reasonable to leave the vehicle in a safe spot on the rural access roads without blocking paths or farms. Trail: null Footwear: closed shoes with grippy soles, useful for dirt paths and possible mud after rain. Best season: autumn, winter and spring. Warnings: Sensitive area for wildlife; it is advisable to keep quiet, not to approach the banks if they are soft and to respect possible access restrictions for livestock or conservation uses.
