Description

The Cerro de San Cristobal is a summit and space of great scenic value in the municipality of Almonaster la Real, in the Sierra de Huelva. It is an elevation of about 912-917 meters, cited as one of the highest peaks in the province of Huelva and as one of the most outstanding natural viewpoints of the Natural Park Sierra de Aracena and Picos de Aroche. From its slope and its summit there is a wide panoramic view over the town of Almonaster la Real, the mosque and the mountain environment, with a mosaic of chestnut groves, oaks, scrubland and pastures. The ascent route runs along traditional paths with steep slopes, stone walls and cobblestone sections, which adds ethnographic interest to the natural value of the place. The enclave is interesting for its role as a watchtower over the region and for the observation of the mountain landscape and gliding and migratory birds. The Junta de Andalucía emphasizes that it offers one of the widest viewing points in the province of Huelva and a good position for bird watching. In addition to its natural interest, on the hill there is an archaeological site with materials from the Late Bronze Age, with ceramic remains and traces of occupation on the surface. The site is included in the General Catalog of Andalusian Historical Heritage, which reinforces the heritage relevance of the place.
