Description
The Cathedral of Our Lady of the Assumption is the cathedral church of El Burgo de Osma, in the province of Soria, and the main religious monument of the town. Its location in the town of Burgo de Osma is linked to the medieval development of the urban center, which arose next to the episcopal see of Osma and under the protection of the new population created around the temple. It is a building of medieval origin whose construction began in the thirteenth century, on a previous Romanesque temple, and whose current appearance responds to a long succession of reforms. The Gothic style predominates, although it incorporates Renaissance, Baroque and Neoclassical contributions, with some parts being completed in the 18th century. Among its outstanding patrimonial elements are the cloister, the tower and the cathedral museum, in addition to its rich collection of sacred art, which is very well indicated in the local patrimonial guides. The cathedral was declared a historic-artistic monument in 1931, a condition now equivalent to an Asset of Cultural Interest, which underlines its relevance within the historical heritage of Castilla y León.
