Description

The Zuloaga Castle-Museum of Pedraza (Segovia) is a private medieval fortress that today functions as a visitable castle and museum linked to the painter Ignacio Zuloaga. It is located in the town of Pedraza, in the province of Segovia, and in tourist sources is associated with the name of Pedraza Castle or Zuloaga Castle and Museum. Its origin dates back to the 13th century, with a rebuilding in the 15th century; the keep dates from that period. In the 16th century the Dukes of Frías, Constables of Castile, reformed the complex and gave it the appearance it retains today. The visible architecture thus responds to a medieval and Renaissance evolution, with successive defensive and residential adaptations. The interior preserves outstanding heritage elements such as the keep, the parade ground and the cistern, as well as a coat of arms of the Herrera family on the staircase leading to the cistern. The relationship with Zuloaga began in 1926, when he acquired the castle, restored one of the towers as a workshop and converted another into an exhibition space. The museum displays works by the painter and, on occasion, pieces from the family's estate, making the complex a unique example of a historic castle reused as a cultural space. The visit allows visitors to understand both the original military function of the fortress and its later artistic and patrimonial value.
