Description

Morella is a monumental and tourist complex of historical character located in Morella, Castellón, in the region of Els Ports, with a location of great strategic value on an elevation dominated by the castle and surrounded by medieval walls. The municipality is recognized as a Historic-Artistic Site and its urban image is articulated around the walled enclosure, with towers and gates that preserve the defensive physiognomy of the town. Among the most outstanding monuments is the castle of Morella, a fortress of medieval origin that presides over the town and explains its military and frontier function for centuries. Also outstanding are the walls, of continuous layout and with towers and access gates, as well as the convent of San Francisco, a set of the thirteenth-fourteenth centuries linked to the Franciscan order and now converted into a tourist-cultural space. The historic center also preserves religious and civil buildings of great patrimonial interest, integrated into the traditional urban fabric. As for museums, Morella has several exhibition spaces of reference, including the Temps de Dinosaures museum, the Sexenni museum and the archpriestly museum, which complement the heritage visit with contents of paleontology, traditional festivals and sacred art. This set reinforces the cultural value of the town beyond its monuments, offering a broad reading of its history, its religiosity and its popular celebrations. A short distance from the town center are also the cave paintings of Morella la Vella, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO within the rock art of the Mediterranean arc, with prehistoric chronology between 9,000 and 5,000 years old. Although they are not an urban monument, they are an essential part of the visitable heritage of the municipality and complete the profile of Morella as a heritage destination of the first order.
