Description

Ruins of a medieval fortress located in the surroundings of the Serra d'Irta, in the municipality of Peñíscola, in a transitional landscape between the coastal mountain and the coast of Castellón. The enclave is identified as a site for its heritage and landscape value, and appears linked to the natural park of the Sierra de Irta in the descriptions of reference. The site preserves the remains of walls, towers and defensive buildings, which allows us to recognize the ancient strategic function of the castle as a control of the territory and inland routes. Its interest lies in the reading of the ruins and the elevated position, with wide views over the mountains and the nearby coastline, a feature that explains its historical choice as a fortified site. In addition to its archaeological and architectural value, the resource stands out for its integration in a protected natural area, which reinforces its attraction for visitors interested in heritage and nature. The sources consulted point out that the medieval complex underwent consolidation and partial recovery, and that it forms part of an environment that is highly valued in guides and cultural routes in Castellón.
